  • Cohen loves gathering site specific data, and this tool is one of his favourites for that job. A single bagged vine leaf, with stem attached, is placed in a pressurized chamber. Using a magnifying glass, Cohen checks for water that's emitted from the cut stem (petiole) and notes the pressure necessary to achieve the effect. … A pressure chamber allows us to gauge leaf water potential as a proxy for the vine's whole water status. In effect, we can see how much (or how little) stress a plant is under given its water supply. Gathering data like this helps us manage a regulated deficit irrigation program—a process that involves mildly stressing the vines in order to encourage the highest quality fruit at harvest. … At UBC, Dr. Simone Castellarin leads a team of researchers who study the impact of deficit irrigation on wine aroma and quality. It's an exciting time to be growing and making wine on Vancouver Island and we're always eager to learn with, and from, our colleagues in viticulture research. 🤓

  • We are so fortunate to have Grace join the Beaufort team for the summer season. No matter the task, she is ALWAYS this smiley and eager, which is absolutely the best disposition in a vineyard. Grace recently completed the Viticulture Certificate program at Okanagan College, and she’s stoked to soak up as much as she can about environmentally responsible grape growing and farming methods.
